Half Term Fun Brings Families Together

780 400 Susie

Spread a Smile was delighted to host a series of family events during half term, bringing together children, young people and families for a week filled with creativity, entertainment and opportunities to make special memories together.

Supporting families living with serious illness is at the heart of everything we do, and our family events provide valuable opportunities for families to enjoy fun experiences away from the pressures of treatment and hospital appointments, while connecting with others who understand their journey.

Inspiring Young Storytellers with Helen Peters

The week began with a fantastic book event featuring celebrated children’s author Helen Peters, organised through friend and supporter Avni Vyas.

Helen captivated children and families as she shared stories about growing up on a farm, explained the book publishing process and revealed how cover artwork and illustrations are developed. Inspired by what they had learned, the children designed their own storybook covers and took part in crafts and entertainment activities.

A particular highlight was the opportunity for every child to receive a signed copy of one of Helen’s books from her popular Jasmine Green series and spend time chatting with Helen individually.

Family Fun at the Movies

Families were then treated to a special cinema outing at Everyman Cinema to watch Toy Story 5.

Before settling in for the film, families enjoyed entertainment and a Toy Story-themed quiz displayed on the big screen, creating a fun and interactive atmosphere. We were delighted to welcome volunteers from our corporate partner Bain Capital, who helped ensure everyone had a fantastic experience.

For many families, these shared outings provide an invaluable chance to relax, laugh together and simply enjoy being together as a family.

A Special Afternoon Tea Experience

The week concluded with a beautiful afternoon tea, generously gifted by Aki Restaurant in Cavendish Square.

12 families attended the event, which was designed for older children and young people. Families enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea freshly prepared by the restaurant’s chef in the stunning private restaurant space. Alongside the food, guests were entertained by tableside magic, singing, face painting and an autumn-themed quiz.

The event created a welcoming and relaxed environment where families could spend quality time together and connect with others facing similar experiences.

We are incredibly grateful to Helen Peters, Avni Vyas, Everyman Cinema, Bain Capital, Aki Restaurant, our entertainers and our volunteers for helping make these memorable family experiences possible.

By creating opportunities for fun, friendship and shared experiences, these events help families build positive memories together and bring moments of joy during what can often be challenging times.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this half term so special for our families. 💜
