Intensive Care Library Project

780 400 Susie

Spread a Smile is delighted to introduce our new Intensive Care Library Project which will see us set up a Spread a Smile book library in six of our NHS hospital partners for families with children on intensive care and high dependency units.

When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, life can become very unsettled, scary and unfamiliar, controlled by schedules, treatment plans and prolonged hospital stays away from family and friends. Through our book libraries Spread a Smile will provide a way for children and their families to find comfort and calm through the familiar activity of reading together.

The project follows on from the success of Spread a Smile’s pre-recorded soothing nursery rhyme and song collection which are available for children to watch and enjoy on our Smile TV digital viewing platform. The libraries will contain a range of story books which families can borrow to read with their children, enjoying special moments of connection.

Online bookstore, Pickled Pepper Books is generously supporting this new initiative, providing an online book list of sensitive and age-appropriate books for children of all ages and stages. Supporters can purchase books from the online store at a discounted rate to be sent to Spread a Smile and distributed to the libraries, providing a wonderful gift for families with children in hospital.

Alongside the onsite libraries, one of Spread a Smile’s talented storyteller, Posey will be recording a series of stories for families to access via Smile TV whenever they need them.

If you would like to purchase a book for our libraries, you can do so here.

Thank you to so much for helping to spread smiles during some of the darkest times for the families we support.

Summer Party 2024

780 400 Susie

The Spread a Smile annual Summer Party returned to Coram’s Fields in London on Thursday 25 July and it was another incredible day filled with fun, laughter and smiles.

We were joined by 780 children, young people, family members and colleagues from our NHS hospital partners and we loved seeing so many of our families and friends coming together to enjoy themselves.

“We’ve had the most incredible day. Thank you all so much to everyone who’s been part of it. My husband and I have come with our little boy Jacob who’s got leukaemia and our little girl, and we’ve had the most magical time together. To spend time together as a family has been wonderful. We’ve had so many laughs and everything he could wish for is here – thank you so much!” Mum, Lucy

The Spread a Smile team once again went all out to put on our best party yet, with so much for our guests to do and enjoy. Over 160 volunteers gave up their time to run a range of different stalls for our guests to enjoy including arts and crafts, face painting, nail art, glitter tattoos, animal petting, slime, football, friendship bracelet making, biscuit, hat and tote bag decorating and water bottle personalisation.

We were joined by Anna’s Animals who brought along some gorgeous animals including tortoises and rabbits. Our friends from the LEGO Group were on hand with trays full of Lego for everyone to get creative building with, plus Hasbro manned their own interactive game stations! Guests also enjoyed making beautiful flower crowns with Freddie’s Flowers, their own bespoke smiley BN biscuits with McVitie’s and the slimiest slime with Slime Planet. And everyone enjoyed the inflatable football goal from Non-Stop Action and the Pop-Up Arcade.

Our brilliant team of Spread a Smile entertainers filled the day with music, singing, dancing, bubbles, magic, poetry and much more. Thomas, Chocco and Zara our therapy dogs also loved meeting lots of new friends.

There were food and treats galore including ice cream rolls from our partners Pan-n-Ice, wood fired pizzas from the Wandering Pizza Company and delicious treats from our friends at Mildred’s, Brigit’s Bakery and Lola’s Cupcakes.

We are extremely proud to be able to deliver days such as this for the families we support, and it was a wonderful opportunity for our guests to put aside their worries for an afternoon and enjoy being together.

We can’t thank our wonderful volunteers enough for giving up their time to make the day possible, plus all of our generous supporters who donated supplies, food and drink.

A special thanks to our friends from Children with Cancer UK and the Children’s Welfare and Research Foundation for their generous support

Thank you to all of our friends, families and colleagues for joining us and making our Summer Party 2024 one to remember. We’re looking forward to next year already.

“Yesterday we attended the Summer Party for the first time…it was truly magical and beyond anything we had imagined. Thank you for throwing such an amazing event! The highlight of the whole day for Layla was dancing with Peppa Pig. She threw herself into it and didn’t stop until Peppa had to go for a rest.

“There definitely was something for everyone, and so many opportunities for creativity with bag and cap designing, open spaces and seated areas, and so many snacks! It was lovely to see so many children enjoying their day, and for me to see my two babies together, enjoying their day out, just being ‘normal’ siblings on a fun day out. They have been forced to spend so much time apart from each other/ limited to hospital visits for so long, so this was really special.” Hena, Layla and Idris

Spread a Smile in-person visit to Southampton Children's Hospital

In-person visit to Southampton

780 400 Susie

Spread a Smile is proud to have been supporting patients on the Piam Brown oncology ward at Southampton Children’s Hospital through virtual visits since 2020. Earlier this month a team of Spread a Smile entertainers made our first in-person visit to the hospital, meeting 64 patients and spreading smiles and laughter across all of the paediatric inpatient wards.

Spread a Smile in-person visit to Southampton Children's HospitalOur team included fairies, Judge the Poet, Mr Magic and Sar with her guitar, bringing so much fun and many moments of distraction for the children and families we met.

We were joined by our friends from Hasbro who brought games, Play-Doh and colouring for patients to enjoy. Where they were able to, patients were invited to join us to participate in lots of board game and creative fun and the team also visited the wards to give out goody bags and Play-Doh to children who couldn’t leave their beds.

Victoria Torpey-Thomas, Playleader at Southampton Children’s Hospital told us, “We are extremely grateful to the wonderful Spread a Smile team and Hasbro for providing such a wonderfully fun time here at UHS. They created so many smiles and giggles not only to the patients but also their families and staff. It was so lovely to see their faces when the entertainers performed their many talents and the guys from Hasbro offered them their gifts. Even numerous days later patients, families and staff are still expressing how great you all were and the massive difference you made to everyone on the day. Thank you all so very much”

Thank you to everyone at Southampton Children’s Hospital for making us so welcome. Also, to Hasbro for giving up their time and supporting the visit, as well as Dorian Laurence and Momentum in Fitness charity, for generously funding the visit and joining us on the day to present the cheque.

Fundraisers from Once in a Lifetime Holidays raising vital funds to help spread smiles to seriously ill children.

Fundraising to support children like Isaac

780 400 Susie

We’re so grateful to every one of our fundraisers who do so much to help raise funds to ensure we can continue spreading smiles to the families we support.

Recently Once in a Lifetime Holidays chose to fundraise to help spread smiles through a challenge packed tour of Europe, with a little boy called Isaac as their motivation, raising £1,355 so far.

“In June 2020 Isaac aged 3 was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour. He spent many months during COVID in Great Ormond Street Hospital with only one of his parents allowed to be present. The two of them were isolated from the outside world, facing the most terrifying ordeal. Isaac underwent operations, chemotherapy and stem cell therapy and his care was excellent, however it was the team at Spread a Smile that really brought a smile to his gorgeous face at the most awful time.

“Isaac is the most amazing young boy, and his mum is nothing short of a superhero and we wanted to raise money to help other children and families smile during these very difficult times.

“So, the Team at Once in a Lifetime Holidays along with several other colleagues from the travel industry decided to take on a tour of Europe, undertaking challenges and events enroute to raise as much money as possible for Spread a Smile.

“Seeing Isaac smile is a gift, and we hope to help Spread a Smile spread even more smiles to seriously ill children and their families as well.”

Thank you to everyone at Once in a Lifetime Holidays and their colleagues for supporting Spread a Smile and children like Isaac. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

If you have a fundraising idea and would like to help spread smiles, please email Tasha at tasha@spreadasmile.org – we’re here for you every step of the way. Or visit our Support Us pages for inspiration.

Mildreds and Sister Act for our VIPs

780 400 Susie

When you’re looking for a memorable experience in London, then dinner followed by a trip to see a West End musical is definitely top of the list. Last week, we treated some of the families supported by Spread a Smile to just that.

We began the party at Mildreds Restaurant in Covent Garden where not only did our families get to enjoy a delicious vegan dinner, they were also entertained throughout with singing, amazing magic, face painting, arts and crafts and our gorgeous therapy dog Buddy, who also came for some cuddles.

After our tummies were full, we headed down to a very special relaxed performance of Sister Act The Musical at London’s Dominion Theatre. The excitement filled the auditorium as everyone relaxed into their seats and enjoyed the amazing show, featuring a star-studded cast. One of guests, Evie, aged 13 was so excited to see actor Ruth Jones perform as she is a big fan of hers and said after the show: “Ruth definitely waved at me!” with a smile from ear to ear.

Evie’s Mum Jo said, “Honestly, thank you from the bottom of my heart. The work you do is just amazing and I’m not sure that thank you is enough for the happiness my girl is feeling right now.”

Viktoria, mum of Emily (13) also said, “We would love to tell you how wonderful you all are! Thank you for all your hard work and lovely smiles to make so many little lives happy. We had a wonderful time with you all and special thank you to the magician Nick, he really blew our minds with his amazing magic!”

We are so grateful to our friends at Mildreds for their continued and generous support and to everyone at the Dominion Theatre for making us so welcome.

Spread a Smile completely relies on donations and support from generous individuals and organisations to fund family events such as this. Please donate here to help ensure we can continue to provide this support for many more families. Thank you.

Bristol radiotherapy mask painting workshop

780 400 Susie

Spread a Smile delivers some incredible art initiatives for children and young people across our NHS hospital partners, including art workshops which support creativity and distraction and bespoke murals which enrich hospital wards and windows, helping to make the hospital environment more welcoming.

Another important part of the charity’s art programme is the personalisation of radiotherapy masks for children and teenagers going through treatment for brain, head and neck cancer.

The programme is delivered by Spread a Smile’s Head of Art, Marina, who works closely with patients preparing for radiotherapy treatment to find out their interests and how they would like their masks decorated. Sometimes a patient draws their own sketch and then Marina will take the ideas and create a bespoke and individual decoration for the mask. The process helps to make the mask less frightening, and experience shows that the patient often becomes very proud of their mask.

Last month Marina visited Spread a Smile’s NHS hospital partner Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital to deliver a special radiotherapy mask training workshop for oncology play specialists from the hospital. The aim was to share our skills and understanding of this important activity with the team at Bristol to enable to them to support patients under their care with their designs.

Each attendee came with their own radiotherapy mask and Marina shared different techniques and ideas for painting the masks using special posca pens. Everyone chose their own design and painted their own mask, to experience the process for themselves, before engaging in a useful discussion about how the masks and painting can be used as a preparation tool for patients needing the masks, helping to make them less worrying.

Britney Wookey, Oncology Play Specialist at Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital took part in the workshop saying, “It’s been long awaited for us to be able to paint radiotherapy masks and thanks to Spread a smile our patients will be offered to help design and paint their mask if they wish. Radiotherapy can be a scary treatment for a child at first but being able to decorate their mask so it is unique to them will give them a sense of control and choice. We now have band new kit gifted by spread a smile and their lovely artist, Marina, taught us some of her amazing art skills. Now we can’t wait to bring our patient’s ideas to life!”

Spread a Smile is proud of this bespoke area of work which reaches and supports young cancer patients during one of the most terrifying times of their lives. As one Mum said, “My son didn’t mind wearing his mask once it was painted and enjoyed talking with other children about what they had on their masks. He was so proud to show it to people. We now have it home and it is a prized possession on his desk which he proudly shows to everyone who comes in. His mask was his protection, and he was proud of what he had been through.”
